Numerology: definition

Numerology is the reading of numbers as bearers of structure and symbolic quality. In tarot, numbers are not mere markers: they take part in the internal logic of the arcana.

Each number brings a quality: the unity of the ace, the duality of the two, the opening of the three, the stability of the four, and so on. This numerical grammar runs through both majors and minors.

Numbers can also intervene in synthesis calculations, reducing or combining values to obtain an arcanum that sums up a spread or characterises a period, a person or a question.

Tarot numerology remains, however, subordinate to context, to the card and to the reading method. The number gives structure, but the image and the position provide the nuance that avoids mechanical readings.

It should not be confused with numerological systems foreign to tarot: here the number is read within the very language of the arcana, in relation to its iconography and its place in the series.

Used in measure, it helps perceive progressions, repetitions and numerical balances in a spread —many fours, an absence of figures, the predominance of one number— as clues about the climate of the whole.

Well integrated, numerology enriches the reading without mechanising it: it adds a layer of structure that dialogues with the image, rather than reducing the cards to a simple combination of figures.
