Etteilla
The pen name of Jean-Baptiste Alliette, a major figure of cartomancy and esoteric reinterpretations of tarot at the end of the 18th century.
Etteilla profoundly marked the history of French cartomancy and the divinatory uses of cards. He proposed systems and methods specific to himself that are not identical with the Marseille tradition.
His name is indispensable in an expanded history of card-reading practices.
