Reading Cloth: definition

The reading cloth is the fabric spread over the table before a tarot spread, creating a dedicated and, for many readers, symbolically sacred space for the cards.

It fulfils a practical function: it protects the cards from wear and dirt, and makes it easier to gather and slide them. A soft surface prolongs the life of the deck and makes shuffling more comfortable.

But it also marks a symbolic boundary: the ordinary table becomes a reading space. Unfolding the cloth is a gesture of opening that marks the beginning of the time of the consultation.

It is traditionally chosen in silk or natural fabric, and its colour and texture are chosen according to the reader's practice and sensibility: dark tones to make the cards stand out, colours with their own symbolic charge.

It is not an indispensable element for reading, but it helps create a frame: like the ritual or the cut, it helps one enter a disposition of attention and respect toward the reading.

At heart, the cloth materialises a simple idea: giving the cards a space of their own, separate from everyday bustle, favours concentration and the quality of interpretation.

Choosing and caring for one's own cloth is, for many readers, a form of respect toward the cards and toward the person consulting: a small detail that contributes to the seriousness of the whole.
