Tarot de Marseille Type I

An iconographic category used by historians to designate the ancient forms of the Tarot de Marseille, appearing mainly between the 17th and early 18th centuries.

Tarot de Marseille Type I corresponds to a family of ancient images characterized by certain graphic and stylistic particularities. The decks of Jean Noblet and Jean Dodal are often studied examples.

These tarots present noticeable iconographic differences compared with later models: certain drawing details, inscriptions, or image structures vary significantly.

The study of Type I allows historians to understand the gradual evolution of tarot images before the more stable fixing of 18th-century models.
