Jean Dodal

A Lyonnais card maker from the early 18th century, known for one of the oldest surviving decks belonging to the Tarot de Marseille tradition.

Jean Dodal was a card maker active in Lyon at the beginning of the 18th century. His tarot, generally dated around 1701, is considered one of the most important testimonies of the ancient Tarot de Marseille tradition.

The Tarot of Jean Dodal presents certain iconographic and orthographic particularities that allow historians to study the evolution of the cards between the earliest Italian tarots and the later Marseille forms.

In contemporary tarot research, the Dodal deck is often studied to understand the transmission of images, symbols, and tarot structures in 17th- and 18th-century Europe.
