Symbolic Wheel: definition

The wheel is the symbol of the cycle, movement, reversal, repetition and change of phase. It evokes the passage from one state to another and the permanent mobility of destiny and circumstances.

It reminds us that reality is not fixed: situations turn, rise and fall, and every moment is inscribed in a cyclical logic where what is above can descend and what is below can ascend.

As an image, it condenses the idea of changing fortune: luck that turns, phases that follow one another, the eternal return of life's seasons. Nothing the wheel touches remains motionless.

In tarot it appears centrally in the Wheel of Fortune arcanum, where it underlines the unstable character of events and the need to accompany the movement rather than resist it.

Its reading can be favourable —a positive turn, an opportunity, the end of a bad moment— or a warning: what rises will eventually fall, so it is best not to cling to a position.

The wisdom the wheel suggests is that of the centre: finding a stable inner point from which to cross the turns of fortune without being dragged by each rise or fall.

That is why the wheel is at once comfort and warning: it comforts in low moments, because everything turns, and warns in high ones, because nothing lasts; its lesson is to learn to flow with change.
