Guidance: definition

An orientation or clarification offered by a reading, without removing the subject's freedom of decision.

The word 'guidance' is often used vaguely in the field of tarot. In a rigorous approach, it designates a symbolic illumination rather than an order, a closed prediction or an absolute truth.

Quality guidance helps better understand a situation, see what is at stake, identify options or points of attention —without locking the person into a dependence on the spread or replacing their own decision.

Guidance is therefore opposed both to mechanical prediction ('this will happen') and to emotional dependence on tarot ('I do nothing without drawing the cards first'). It aims to give the querent back a power of interpretation.

In practice, useful guidance rests on a clear question, a coherent spread, a structured reading and a delivery that opens paths instead of closing the future. It explicitly acknowledges its limits.

Understood this way, guidance turns the consultation into an accompaniment: it helps the person think their situation, weigh options and decide with more lucidity, rather than expect from the cards an instruction that exempts them from choosing.

Good guidance also acknowledges its limits: it does not replace medical, legal or psychological advice, and it takes care not to create dependence. Its value lies in giving the person back their own capacity for interpretation and action.

Genuine guidance, then, leaves the person freer than it found them: it lights the path without walking it for them, and trusts them to take the next step.

Frequently asked questions

Can card guidance replace professional advice?
No. Symbolic guidance never replaces medical, legal, psychological or financial advice. It offers a symbolic illumination, not a diagnosis or expert counsel.
What is the difference between guidance and prediction?
Prediction claims to announce a future event. Guidance offers a symbolic illumination of a current situation or a path, leaving the person their full freedom of decision.
